Forget dancing dogs or housebound singing sensations. I think I’ve unearthed the next winners of Britain’s Got Talent – all I’ve got to do is get them a visa.
They are the Apaçi dancing sensations from the mean streets of Ankara. For those of you who aren’t quite up to date on your European street dancing, the Apaçi I saw were something of a comic take on hip hop. A quick Google informs me that historically Apaçi would often imitate a ‘violent discussion between a pimp and a prostitute’. These guys have range.
I had the pleasure of working with some Apaçi masters out in Turkey and, after seeing their moves close up; I have nothing but respect for the guys. The culture of Apaçi dancing is traditionally rooted in the poorer, immigrant communities of Europe and a few grainy YouTube clips aside, it’s far from mainstream. But after their star turn in our Fiat commercial, I think that could change. That’s right, 2011’s next big thing: The Apaçi dance. You heard it here first.
